Nokia C0 Phone

Nokia C0: The model number remains a mystery.

Nokia C0: The model number remains a mystery.

There’s been some sightings of a new phone in the wild: a Sidekick-ish slider branded with the mysterious “C0″ designation. Nokia uses zeroes to indicate prototype phones, and the C probably means it’s destined for the C-series line of medium-end phones. That hasn’t stopped people from calling it out as the elusive N9, a phone that’s been in the rumor mill without any real concrete info.

Could this possibly be the N9? That’s tough to say, but there’s a lot of evidence against it:

  • The C0 is running Symbian, not MeeGo. Nokia has stated that Symbian is being dropped from the Nseries line.
  • It’s a C0. N-series prototypes were labeled as N00′s.
  • The N8, the N9′s predecessor, already broke the 12 megapixel barrier several months ago. Offhand, I can’t think of a single Nokia successor phone that went backwards in megapixels.

It does, however, look eerily similar to the N8. Maybe a C8?

The specs are pretty meaty. There’s onboard NAM 3G (850/1900), an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, front camera with LED flash (something new there), 4″ capacitive multi-touch display, and HDMI out. The C0 has the spring-loaded hinge reminiscient to that seen on the N97, and a nicely-spaced keyboard with four rows. It’s also fairly thin.

All in all, it looks good. Great even. If the stars align and it – somehow – ends up becoming the next MeeGo-enabled device, I’d buy it. Until then, expect speculation to run rampant.

Check TechnoBuffalo for an in-depth video look at the device.

N900 Tweaking Tools

Shortcutd, Tweakr, and Phone Speakers Switcher.Shortcutd, Tweakr, and Phone Speakers Switcher.

There’s quite a few tweaking programs for the N900. But these three all bring something new to the table when it comes to managing calls and button presets.

Shortcutd

Shortcutd allows you to map your camera button to several predefined actions, OR a custom shell command. There’s options for both long and short presses, and I have both of mine mapped to “Launch Phone”. This lets me quickly open up the Phone app faster than sitting there waiting for the accelerometer to rotate the screen (I turned this feature off because it was so laggy). I love it.

You can also use your proximity sensor as a “button” (essentially by covering it for either a short or long amount of time), but I’ve had some negative experiences with it so I try to avoid the sensor as much as possible.

Tweakr

Tweakr is a collection of random options smushed together. The crown jewel is the “Snap icons to grid” setting, letting you lock desktop icons into place. Nokia, for some odd reason, did not include a sort or snap to grid option, and without Tweakr we’re simply left with icons that are sprinkled all over the place.

Another key setting that Tweakr lets you muck around with is the Power key. Normally, hitting it once brings up the phone menu, and holding it down turns the phone off. With Tweakr, you can disable/enable any or all power key functionality, or switch it up slightly. I’m not quite sure if double-tapping the Power key normally locks the phone, but you can either enable that or opt to show the menu instead.

Finally, there’s an option to mess around with the phone profiles. Tweakr lets you copy the General profile, but it looks like it just renames it instead. So I guess consider that a feature.

Phone Speakers Switcher

Phone Speakers Switcher is an interesting little tool that gives you several ways to activate the N900 loudspeaker during a call. I’ve been testing out using the proximity sensor to automatically turn on the loudspeaker when the phone is away from my face, and it’s been working fairly well. It’s a little weird to get used to though. And I swear sometimes my proximity sensor is a bit finicky. If the sensor’s not your thing, you can always use the Camera key, or slide open the keyboard to activate the speaker.

Other options include using the Camera button to end the call (probably not the best idea in my book) and opening the dashboard when the speakers are activated.

Cool N97 Metal Detector

Here is an app that demonstrates why mobile phones will be the swiss knife of the future; why the future is headed to the mobile sector.

When I found this app on the Ovi Store I thought it was some kind of joke like the smell scanner which is actually a fake ”joke” app. But the metal detector app for the Nokia N97 actually works! It is really amazing (and free). I downloaded the app and tried it on several metal things, it got every single one right! For example, this box of Altoids:

SkyTV Mobile App For Nokia Phones | SkyTV For Nokia

Here are excellent news for Nokia users who have Sky TV and wanted to switch to the iPhone just because it supported the SkyTV app. SkyTV is now available for Nokia smartphones! Only Nokia touchscreen phones are supported by SkyTV: Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 (Mini), Nokia X6, 5530 and so on. The SkyTV app will become available for more devices, we will have to wait and see which devices will be supported, hopefully, S60 3rd Ed devices like the popular E71, E75 or E72.

Nokia X6 NAM

Remember we told you that the Nokia X6 was coming in the NAM flavorNokia X6 was coming in the NAM flavor? Not many thought that it was going to come, and it took some time, but is finally here, the NAM version of the Nokia X6.

 Is Responsive To Your Touch

Nokia USA just made available the Nokia X6 in the North American Market. Currently the Nokia X6 is being offered in both of the Flagship stores in the US, it will also hit the NokiaUSA online store, what we still don’t know is when. The Nokia X6 first made is debut as a ”Comes With Music” only phone for markets that supported the service, Nokia later unveiled a 16GB version, but no NAM X6 was mentioned. Today the X6 NAM silently appeared at NokiaUSA in three colors, yellow, blue and black. Along with a description that reads ”responsive to your touch,” which we find very ironical, partly because the Nokia X6 is the first capacitive touchscreen device from Nokia. Seems they learnt that resistive screens weren’t that responsive after all

Formula1 | f1 App For Nokia Devices

This is a great app for F1 enthusiasts! The Formula1 season started a few days ago and I am sure that fans want to have all the information of what is happening while they are on the go. I usually use my Nokia device to check scores on different sports and events, so I thought that the Formula1 app would be useful for F1 fans around the world. But side from being useful, the F1 app for touchscreen Nokia devices like the X6, N97 Mini, 5800, 5230 and more is really complete, feature pack and brilliantly done. It has the dates of upcoming races, ”Live Timing’ for when the event is taking place, a regressive counter for the next race, and most importantly: Standings.

Nokia E55 Software Update

The Nokia E55 just got a new software update! I always wanted a Nokia E55, unfortunately Nokia didn’t release an E55 for the US. This phone seems so practical and powerful that it would make a great phone for risk situations where you don’t want to take a more expensive device, like camping, gym etc…

e55 software update Nokia E55 Software Update: The E55 Gets New
Firmware!

Anyway, the Nokia E55 got a new firmware. The new software update for the E55 is v33. It is still unknown what specific things were changed on V33, the only obvious one is that the free version of Ovi Maps now comes pre-installed on the phone. Nothing else is known, you can get the new software update on your E55 by going to ”SW Update,” which means that you can do it OTA without a computer. If you find anything new on the new software for the E55 please leave a comment.
